NY Proud

I think its a rule that you arent a real NYC theater worker until you are inanimately familiar with the smell of dead mouse. Its kind of like the rule that you aren't a real New Yorker till youve been pooped on by a pigeon. New York strong. New York proud.

Waking up from the Pill

I highly encourage every woman on the Pill to read this NY Times article entitled Waking Up from the Pill. While I dont agree with every statement and attitude presented in this article, I do agree that American women today have a very significant disconnect with their bodies, especially concerning reproduction and childbirth (which are our prime biological functions after all).

Hey, Im on the pill and have been for over 10 years, but over the past few years as I've started to consider starting a family I've often thought to myself "Isnt there something strange about tricking my body into thinking its been pregnant for all these years? Whats going to happen when I stop fooling her and want her to actually be pregnant?"

Sooo, I encourage you to read this article and just start a conversation with yourself, your sister, your girlfriend, your doctor about it. Or leave a friendly comment here about your thoughts.

Childbirth

As any of you who have spoken with me on the subject know , I feel very strongly towards (one day) having a natural childbirth at a birthing center. This beautiful video only strengthens that opinion...

Thanks to my dear friend and NICU Nurse Katie for the link ;-) I cried.

Text-Walkers Beware!

My new pet-peeve-people are "text- walkers". They're going all slow and then I have to bob and weave all around them. Sooooo annoying. It's dangerous, too! Just watch:

Also, I may just trip you on purpose and then laugh at you and say "Stupid text- walker!"

Weird NY Moment #1

Weird New York Moment #1: When your walking down the street and say, maybe you turn a corner or something, and your walking pace lines up perfectly with a complete strangers. All of a sudden your walking side by side at the same tempo and it feels like your walking together, like you re friends or something. Its so awkward and you are definitely both aware of it. One person has to either slow down or speed up or turn the corner in order to break the connection. So. Weird.

Its Harry Potter time again...

Have you seen the new Harry Potter Deathly Hallows trailer?

I've watched it about 10 times so far. Super excited!

In other news- I've GOT to get a handle on my serious sugar addiction.

I think after I quite smoking (over 3 years ago) I transfer addicted because eating a cookie or candy bar gives me that same sort of satisfaction. Does anyone else struggle with this or have you overcome it? Tomorrow Im going to buy some reading on the subject.

Seen and Heard...

Confession: Every time I see the name Sean written out I read it as Seen rather than Shawn. Every time.

My thoughts exactly, Mr. Penn.

Personal Hygiene 101

So, I spend a lot of time on the subway. Think about all the time you spend in your car, but then imagine that 100 strangers are in there with you. They breath your air and very often are so close that you are touching each other. I've gotten used to it over the years but there are certain things that people do on the train that I just cant get used to. The MAJOR thin that drives me bonkers is grooming. I can not stand it when people groom themselves on the train. It is so gross. I can deal with a lipstick touch up, but that's about as far as my patients runs. Examples of grooming I have witnessed that made my skin crawl:

1. Full on makeup application. From cover up, to powder, to ridiculously trying to apply mascara between stops. No one wants to see your "beauty" regime!
2. Nail clipping. This happens more often that you'd think. People just let the clippings fall right onto the floor. Eeeekkk! The particles!
3. Nail filling. More tolerable that clipping, but still repulsive. Again, the particles!
4. Nail painting. Um, NO! Subways cars are not well ventilated and those fumes stink!
4. Flossing. Yes, teeth flossing. Oh, this might be the nastiest. A toothpick is better, but still gross.
5. Hair brushing. No one wants another persons hair on them. Similarly, dont pick hairs off your clothes and them them fly into the air to land on someone else. EEeew!
6. Tweezing. Seriously?
7. Fragrance application. I dont care if its Lady Gaga's newest scent, I dont want to smell it! Again with the poor ventilation!

Ugh! Now that Im done with my rant, I beg of my fellow public transit commuters, keep your personal hygiene personal! Thanks.

** P.s. just after I wrote this I was searching for a picture to use and I found this article. Apparently the NY Times agrees :-)

Finnegan's Wake!

Every now and then E and I find a reason to visit the Upper East Side, the neighborhood where we went to college and where I lived for 4 years. Almost all of my college memories are confined to a 10 block radius encompassing most of the east 70's. It always feels a little weird walking down the same block we walked so many times on our way to class, or passing by a store front thats now different and saying "Hey, where did Healthy Bagel go? I loved that place!" or something along those lines.

One of the days we almost always travel to this neighborhood for is St. Patty's Day. St. Patty's day is crazy in NYC but we brave the crowds to venture to one of our old college haunts... Finnegan's Wake. Finnegan's was one of two Irish pubs we frequented (the other being Kelly's but sadly it's no longer with us). We made it a point to go early this year because last year we almost missed the food... and oh.... the food! We LOVE the Bangers and Mash!

It's funny when we go there now I cant imagine how annoying our group of drunk 20 somethings must have been to all the old Irish locals. Its a pretty small quiet place but we would make ourselves right at home. Still, my favorite memories of Finnegan's are the nights E and I would be there alone, talking till 2 am when they would finally kick us out. Even though many parts of NYC living get me down and tire me out, its beautiful days like today that remind me what a special place it can be. It is the backdrop of the beginning my adult life and its the first chapter in our love story. I guess thats pretty awesome. :-)

Pretty...

Let me know if this works for anyone...

This week I had a suprising realization...

I've decided I want to go back to school. I came to this conclusion over a few long conversations E and I had about our future. See, neither of us wants to live in this city much longer but we've chosen careers that are pretty limiting geographically. So we talk and I think, Ok- what would I do if we left NYC? Finding a full time costuming job in the New England area is hard. They get snatched up quickly and then dont open up again for thirty years. Not that I wouldn't try- but what if it just didnt happen? I cannot work retail or restaurant jobs between theater gigs as a Mom. Yes, thats another consideration. When will we be able to start a family? In our present circumstances it seems like that is light years away, yet it's something we both desperately want. I know we are still young and we do have time to figure things out but I'm a person who needs a plan. A forecast.

So, I started to think, what is the best, most favorite job I've ever had? Easy. American Girl. Why was that job so much better than any job I've had before or since? Easy. The girls. I absolutely thrived off the energy they brought to the theater. I loved being able to inspire them, encourage them, and laugh with them. Any event that meant I got to spend time with the young performers or on the floor with the young customers, I was giddy with excitement. Being around the kids is the thing I've been missing the most over the past two years.

Hence my decision to go back to school to pursue a Masters in Early Childhood Education. I've only begun the process of researching schools and programs here in NYC and weighing my options. As of now, I think I will approach the degree as a part- time student so I am still able to do costuming work.

Only a few months ago I would have never thought that I would be excited to go back to school, but now I truly am. The ideas are swirling in my head about the ways I will be able to use this degree and Im excited about what new doors is will open in our lives.
